The 27-minute film Travelling Medicine Show 1: Creation is a powerful classroom starting point to explore, in a deeply imaginative and experiential framework, themes of creation, environment, rites of passage, imagination, storytelling, and more. The film, television and computer media with which our students are saturated are designed for instantaneous reaction. Travelling Medicine Show 1: Creation is a profoundly enigmatic narrative. As such it presents an opportunity for students to begin to look at images and visual storytelling in a different way, as they explore the film's densely layered subject matter from the standpoint of personal imagination and experience.
To date we have used the film in classrooms ranging from Grades 7 to 12, and in a wide range of subject areas including English, ESL, Screenwriting, Media Arts, Visual Art, Drama, Dance, Health, and Geography. In addition to DVDs, a detailed classroom guide is available.
